Currently . . .

I’m sick with a terrible head cold and I have a birthday just days away. Not a good combination.

I never really feel my age until I’m under the weather. Then, in that vulnerable state, I have my own little pitty party and feel old. I start seeing things about myself that I hadn’t noticed a couple of days ago. Like all of a sudden, the skin on my hands looks older. And this morning I noticed another wrinkle under my eyes. Wow.

So this is how it happens. Life is feeling like a nice slow ride and then with a small bump in the road – either an illness or injury –the speed picks up and before you know it you’re hurtling toward the end zone.

OK, maybe that’s a little dramatic, but honestly, that’s how it feels sometimes. At least in the stuffy-nose, head-throbbing, weepy-eyes state of being where I currently find myself.

But let’s not dwell there. After all, a cold will pass, and a birthday – well, in my book, that’s something to celebrate. My best friend just had a birthday this week as well, and in her words, “Well, what can I say. The number is what it is. The good news is I’m still here.” Enough said.

I’m sure happy she’s still here and pretty thrilled that I am, too!

“Life gets mighty precious when there’s less of it to waste.” Bonnie Raitt

I’ve always loved that my birthday was at the start of the holiday season. Just seemed fitting to me (if you get my drift – wink). The celebration starts on the first and continues all month long. Not bad.

Now, rather than gifts and cake and parties, I’m more interested in experiences and time with friends and family.  I think most of us around this age would agree. Except, I’d still really like the cake part. Just sayin’.

And as if on cue knowing I wasn’t feeling well and that I have a birthday just around the corner, it started raining. Just about nothing else could make me happier right now than rain. I believe I can hear my garden singing.

Rain and Hallmark Christmas movies, that is.  I know, I know. The drivel of a Hallmark movie. What can I say? I’m a sucker for the predictable, sugary, and simpleminded. Particularly when Christmas is involved.

Now, I think I’ll head downstairs, make a nice cup of tea, put a fire on, and curl up with a cat or two. Oh yeah, and a Hallmark movie.

Till next time,

Judy

First of all, feel better fast! Secondly, Happy early Birthday! May this next year be your BESTEST year! Wow, I was right there with you as I was reading your message but without the cold, well done!! I have a quote to share with you and your readers that I’ve been sharing with friends and colleagues.

“It’s not how much time you have left, it’s what you do with the time you have left that’s important.” At first, I was thinking long term, you know like a legacy. But then I realized it is every minute of every day!!! Merry Christmas and may we all use the gift of time wisely!

Once again, your description of responding to small signs of aging vis-a-vi your concurrent cold is totally familiar. I hope you feel better soon and can enjoy your birthday. You are a dear friend and a wonderful person. We are a better world with you in it. 🎂🛍🎉❤️

Enjoy your birthday, the first day of a month’s worth of celebrations. I like that you won’t let a miserable cold and the appearance of a barely discernible wrinkle get in the way of enjoying a good rainstorm, a cup of tea and a Hallmark Christmas movie. You are a very special person my friend.

Happy birthday Sis. I remember the day that you were born and brought home. My thoughts, at seven, “What the heck is this”. Now I know what the heck this is and am so proud of you.

My body tells me that I’m getting older, aches and pains, but my mind say that I’m still younger and strong. I’ll go with what my mind is telling me. Mirrors suck. Anyway, Happy Birthday Jude.
